Skagway - excursion up the Yukon

Saturday, May 23

We're docking quite early in Skagway this morning. I'm very excited about today's excursion up the Yukon and am on one of the first buses.

We are leaving Alaska and going back into Canada, having to go through customs along the way.

The scenery is getting more and more beautiful.

We even spot a bear traipsing along the road, but he quickly takes himself off into the bushes when the bus gets too close for his liking.
Although it is brown in colour, it's still a black bear.

The Yukon, a territory in northwest Canada, is wild, mountainous and sparsely populated. It’s known for dog-sledding, canoe expeditions, hiking, salmon fishing and other outdoor pursuits, as well as for the colourful northern lights sometimes seen in its nighttime sky. Kluane National Park and Reserve includes Mt. Logan, Canada’s highest peak, as well as glaciers, trails and the Alsek River, renowned for rafting.
  • Capital:

There is even a small desert.

Wildflowers in full bloom in the desert.

Bennett Lake is a lake in the Province of British Columbia and Yukon Territory in northwestern Canada. It is just north of the border with the United States state of Alaska, near the Alaskan port of Skagway.

Here's where we stop for lunch and some extra adventure.

This is jade

This dog sledding may not be on snow, but the dogs need to get their training in for the famous Iditarod. What better way to do it than pulling wagons with tourists around. The dogs have as much fun as we do.

All too soon, we have to be on our way again. The coach takes us for another scenic drive to Fraser, where we board the little train.
Fraser, British Columbia is a location on the Klondike Highway in northwestern British Columbia. It has no permanent residents or businesses.

For most of the journey, I stand out on the little platform hanging on with one hand and taking photos with the other, It is just so breathtakingly beautiful, I can't stop.

Well, taking photos stops automatically when the camera battery goes flat on me....grrr.
First thing I have to do when I get back on the ship is to plug the battery in. Luckily, it doesn't take too long to charge again.

By the time we leave Skagway, the camera is once again in working order.

Tonight, I'm greeted by this laid back dog offering me a chocolate on its paw. These people are incredible.
