After a restless night, worrying that I'd miss hearing the alarm this morning, I get up very early without the alarm.
Excited, I traipse down to Lonsdale Quay where I pick up the bus to go to Grouse Mountain. Nannette and I have breakfast with the bears is booked for today.
Good morning Vancouver - looking across from Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver |
Going up Grouse Mountain in the Gondola. The view is breathtaking. |
Grouse Mountain is one of the North Shore Mountains of the Pacific Ranges in the District Municipality of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Wikipedia
Having followed the white bear foot prints, we arrive at the enclosure outside the yurt. |
The two bears are the first thing we spot |
There is a breakfast buffet waiting inside the yurt, but the bears are keeping us captivated. |
It seems I could barely scratch a black bear's ears. Coola and Grinder would be well out of my reach. |
The two 14 year old boys seem to have no end of fun watching the tourists.
I am totally enamored as they remind me very much of the Bernese Bears, which are of course the same species.
This scenery reminds me very much of my old home too |
But the bears have our undivided attention
Another glimpse at the surroundings while the bears slink off for a little rest.
Then the rangers decide to throw a couple of water melons into the pond as a special treat. The sound of a special whistle brings them back to the pond where they discover the much loved treat in the water.
What a pleasure to watch them devour and enjoying it.
It is now time for a proper siesta for the bears, so we take ourselves off for a bit of a walk. That's where I spot this pretty little bird, just posing for me.
There is a chairlift going up a hill and I can't resist.
The foot of the windmill has been prettied up. There is a lift going up to a viewing platform and naturally, we have to get up there for an even better view. |
Coming back down, we decide to go in search of some lunch. Getting there, however, is not straight forward as we have to take photos of all these wonderful sculptures. Each one of them is carved out of a single tree trunk.
Lunch is the most ordinary food I have eaten in Canada. It's so bad that I actually leave some behind which is very unusual for me.
After lunch we sit in the little theater and watch some documentaries about the animals in the sanctuary.
When we come out of there, we notice a bird show in progress and just catch the end of it.
Afterwards, we get some close up shots of the falcon and the owl.
The afternoon is drawing to a close and it is time to say good-bye to one of the most fascinating places around.
Just a couple more sculptures before we board the bus for Lonsdale Quay.
One last meal together and then it is goodbye to Nannette who is travelling home tomorrow.
