A trip to Whidbey Island in the US of A

Monday, June 8

Today, we're driving across the border into the state of Washington USA. Fort Langley is very close to the US border. We are heading to Whidbey Island.

The snow covered, dormant volcano Mt Baker can be seen from Fort Langley. Today, this mountain seems to follow us around.

Mount Baker, also known as Koma Kulshan or simply Kulshan, is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington in the United States. Wikipedia
  • Elevation:
    • 3,286 m
  • Last eruption:
    • 1880
  • Mountain range:
    • North Cascades
    • Cascade Range

A very beautiful spot we pass on the way is Deception Pass
Deception Pass is a strait separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island, in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Washington. It connects Skagit Bay, part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Wikipedia
The water current was originally thought to be a river - this proved to be deceptive

Deception Pass Bridge, height 54 m, construction started 1934

We drive as far as Coupeville, a charming seaside town and stop for a fish and chips lunch at Toby's Tavern

Some years ago, I created a calendar with drawings of old buildings and things and called it 'The tooth of time'
I reckon I'm seeing plenty of old barns today to half fill another such calendar.

Another wonderful day in the company of my dear friends.

A day's sight seeing with a difference

Sunday, June 7

Today we are booked to go on the Historic House Tour together with a friend who knows the city like the back of her hand.

The tour starts by False Creek near the former athletes' quarters. There is a beautiful little park.
Couldn't resist getting that Swiss flag into the picture

For obvious reasons, there are no photos of any of the houses and apartments we visit.
The first two buildings are in the vicinity of False Creek.
The first one is a former warehouse. We get to see four very interesting, converted apartments in there.
The second building was always an apartment building. We see three of them, also very interesting.

Then we move on to individual houses, and very individual they are indeed. All are vintage houses, naturally, and everyone of them has been done up beautifully, interestingly and in a very original way.

There is one, however, that really stands out. It has a turret which can be hidden away by a sliding bookshelf. There is a dumb waiter which goes from the ground floor all the way up to a little roof garden.
The best, and most intriguing feature however, is the upstairs bathroom. It has a very deep round bathtub in one corner. On the opposite wall is a very large shower recess - built to be used by two people - featuring a floor to ceiling glass panel overlooking the staircase. Gasp!
But  then we check the view from the staircase and there, high up on the wall, we see a very large, ornately framed mirror :-)
How decadently cheeky!

Who knows, if we were to open some closets, we might even find skeletons.......but of course, we don't do that.

That was definitely sightseeing with a difference.

An early morning walk and a cruise on the Fraser River

Saturday, June 6

Having seen the coyote yesterday evening without being able to take a photo, I'm out very early this morning - just after five -, trying to get a glimpse of some wildlife.

I get very wet feet from the dew in the freshly mowed paddock and see countless big fat black slugs.
These two horses come out of their stable to greet me

and when I get back to the house, the male humming bird is at the feeder.
As I sneak up closer to get a better picture, it takes off and buzzes around me indignantly. Wow, what a big noise for such a tiny creature. Now I know how they got their name.

Not long after breakfast, we drive over to New Westminster where we board a paddle wheeler for a two and a half hour luncheon cruise on the Fraser River.
The weather is glorious, the food is sumptuous and the commentary is non-stop.
Another absolutely awesome experience.
For someone who has such a fascination with bridges, I'm certainly in the right place today.

Thank you Steve and Sue for another wonderful day.
