A very long Saturday

The big adventure started on Saturday, May 9 with a long non-stop flight from Sydney to Vancouver.
With no time to lose, I transferred to  the flight from Vancouver to Calgary.
On the way, I saw the first snow capped mountains. Some looked as if the icing on the cake had been a bit runny.

More than 24 hours later I arrived in Calgary and met up with the best part of the group - and it was still Saturday, May 9!

I had arranged to pick up a hire car to drive out to the Yumnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary that very afternoon with three of my new travel mates.
Unfortunately, one of them got held up and we wasted some time looking for her. When we finally got to the hire car company, we found them extremely slow and complicated. More wasted time!
The car was supposed to be a little Ford Fiesta, but the young man said, he didn't have one of those with a Sat Nav in it. I asked him to just give me a map and show me how to get out of town. But apparently, that was asking too much. He couldn't find a proper map - and I suspect he didn't know how to read one either. So we had to wait a little while longer for another car to be brought back in. That car turned out to be a little black people mover, looking for all the world like a hearse.
After all that, we were very late leaving town and getting a bit lost trying to get out of it didn't help.
We arrived at the Sanctuary too late for our tour and the girls there couldn't find it in their hearts to give us even just 5 minutes of their time.

Still, we managed to get a glimpse and a few photos of some of the animals.

Despite the disappointment, we had a fun outing with lots of laughs and driving back into town was quite a breeze. Only finding a petrol station turned out to be a bit of a challenge as they seemed to be few and far between.

Here is something we walked past on the way back to the Hotel.

In the evening we finally met with the rest of the group, only 17 of us, and received the first instructions from our tour leader.

A very long Saturday indeed.
